FAQS

The answers you've been needing

CAN I KEEP MY TREES IN THE POTS FOR AWHILE, OR DO I NEED TO PLANT THEM IMMEDIATELY?

You don’t have to plant your trees immediately. They’ll be fine hanging out in their pots for a little while. If you decide to keep them in their pots temporarily, you need to make sure you keep them watered consistently -- every other day at the minimum during the hot & sunny summer months.

You should also be able to “feel” the soil in the pot to tell if your plant needs water. You want the soil to feel moist, not wet.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I WATER MY TREES ONCE I PLANT THEM?

During the hot summer months, you’ll want to make sure you’re watering your citrus tree at least twice a week. You can reduce to once during the winter months.

Overwatering your citrus is just as bad as not watering it at all.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I FERTILIZE MY TREES?

You should fertilize your trees at least once every other month, but you should stop fertilizing around July.

WHAT KIND OF FERTILIZER SHOULD I USE?

There are many fertilizer options out there - you don’t have to spend a lot of money on this or buy a citrus only fertilizer.

We generally use a 10-10-10 mixture which refers to the parts/percentages of nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium. You should be able to find this at any garden store.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE MY CITRUS TREES TO BEAR FRUIT?

Many varieties will bear small fruit in year 2 or 3/the first year that you plant them. For at least that first year that they produce fruit, you should pick off the fruit as soon as you see it because producing fruit early on will slow branch and foliage growth.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF THE TEMPERATURE DROPS BELOW FREEZING?

The majority of citrus trees that we sell are cold-hardy, which means that they’re tolerant to cold temperatures. This doesn’t mean that they are completely freeze resistant. If we get a bad cold snap in the winter, you’ll want to freeze protect your trees.

The easiest thing to do is to cover or wrap your trees. You can also use a water/sprinkler for frost protection. We do sell citrus frost protection bags if that’s something you’re interested in.
